Food is Love

Last Sunday we heard one of the many scriptures about banquets, feasts, and food in general. Sometimes they’re just about having a place at the table in fellowship with others. Sometimes they suggest we should eat with people that the world says aren’t worthy, but God says they are. “Jesus is the Bread of Life” talks about how His peace fills you, so you’ll never be hungry or thirsty again.

There are also lots of jokes about church potlucks and Jell-O salads, but who doesn’t feel the love when we’re all eating together? I’ve heard so many stories of families looking for a church and kids saying, “I like the one that had donuts!”

We have two celebrations in the next few weeks to celebrate living into our faith with stewardship and fellowship, and of course they involve food! Atonement has their annual Grace & Gratitude BBQ on Oct. 24 and Salem will celebrate our Commitment Sunday with a brunch between services on Nov. 1. As we continue our collaboration in this stewardship season, we will celebrate all that we do as individuals and families for each congregation, and the church as a whole.

And isn’t that part of why food brings us together? During worship, we are fed by scripture, music, preaching the gospel, communion — but by experiencing it with our church family, we share the blessings we’re given with each other. We are all invited to the banquet. Won’t you come and dine?

In Christ’s love,
Heather Lewis
