Nehemiah Action

As I write this, we are two weeks away from Good Faith Network’s Nehemiah Action meeting. It will be held Tuesday, April 28 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Leawood campus of Resurrection: A United Methodist Church (formerly known as Church of the Resurrection). It is not too late to let me, Renee Loya, or Chris Wise know you are coming.
I’ve spent some time thinking about why the work of Good Faith Network (GFN) is important to me. After all, I live in Clay County, Missouri. Many of the things GFN advocates for will not personally benefit me. But that doesn’t matter. As a pastor, I am called to care for people with no regard to borders physical or implied.
I have been aware of the work of GFN for the last four years. And I think the main reason I choose to support the work of GFN with my prayers, my involvement, and my financial gift is because I’ve seen the work be successful. I have seen what can happen when people of all faiths come together and demand more of the people in power. I have seen what happens when those same people of faith are told “no” and keep going anyway.
The focuses for this year’s assembly are affordable housing, aging in place, and mental health stabilization. These ideas aren’t necessarily radical by any means. But sometimes they are treated that way. My faith is what continues to fuel my desire to stay involved in this work. I am looking forward to our next Nehemiah Assembly. I am choosing to show up for my neighbors whose voices are often not heard or not taken seriously. It will be a very inspiring evening — will I see you there?
