Born Again Into Lent

We always joke about how Lutherans (and anyone else, for that matter) dislike change. It’s uncomfortable to do something different, whether or not you like what you’re doing now. So instead of leaning into the fear of change, please allow me to put an optimistic spin on the concept: let’s consider change as an opportunity to reinvent yourself. Is there anything you’d like to do differently? Would you like a fresh perspective, and possibly see things from a different angle? Change is growth, and we can’t possibly grow without the opportunity to change what we’re doing.
Every year we have a season where we are encouraged to reinvent ourselves. We started on Ash Wednesday, where we’re reminded that we are cleansed from our sin. The first Sunday in Lent we heard about Jesus spending 40 days in the desert, where He was reminded that He is the Son of God and He will use His power for good. This Sunday Jesus tells Nicodemus that he needs to be born again to experience the kingdom of Heaven, reminding us that God so loved the world that He gave His only Son to show us how to love each other.
