What Are You Looking For?

I had a conversation with my daughter last night about being positive versus negative. She was remembering when she was younger that I’d redirect her when she was upset to look at the positive side of situations instead of focusing on the negative. Then later when I was upset about something it would freak her out, since the message she heard from me was to not embrace feelings of anger or sadness. Hmmm…oops!
Isn’t it interesting how our perspective can change based on how we (or others) look at situations? In our gospel reading this week, John the Baptist is explaining how he came to realize that Jesus was God’s Chosen One, and then identified Jesus as the Lamb of God to his followers. Those followers immediately went to follow Jesus, asked Him where He was staying, and Jesus invited them to “come and see.”
Think about a time when you were invited by someone to come and see something: maybe it’s a new restaurant or show, something online, or meeting a new person. I would hope that the person who invited you was touched somehow by what they wanted to share. Were you open to the experience, assuming you’d also be touched? Or were you skeptical, choosing instead to look for things to criticize?
Before John’s followers talked to Jesus, He noticed they were following Him and turned around, asking them, “What are you looking for?” I encourage you this week to consider this as you experience the world around you. Are you looking for what is wrong with the world, or what is good in the world? I guarantee, either way, you will find it.
