Sobriety

So many weeks, one of us reflects on the readings, the season of the church year, or the ongoings of the church. This week, I want to share something about me that I’ve shared with some of you but want all of you that read to know: I’m an alcoholic. I am not ashamed of this status in my life. It is part of my story but it doesn’t define me.

Almost 6 years ago, I was preparing to have weight loss surgery and my doctor said part of the pre-surgery requirements included quitting drinking. Up until then, I was what might be called a gray area drinker (for more information, check out this page: https://www.hanleycenter.org/what-is-gray-area-drinking/). I didn’t drink every day or night. But when I did, I went pretty hard.

I never had a “rock bottom” that included some stories you might have heard from others. I was never unfaithful. I never woke up in jail. I never had any troubles with the law (other than a speeding ticket that had nothing to do with drinking). But what I realized is that I used alcohol too much to cope.

If I had a good day, I’d have a drink. If I had a bad day, I’d have a drink. If I was stressed, I’d drink. And I often drank in excess. So when I was required to quit, I struggled. It was then that I realized I may have a troublesome relationship with alcohol. This didn’t surprise me one bit, as I have more than one fellow addict in my family.

So, with the help of a therapist, I quit drinking. It was hard. I was forced to face my feelings and deal with stress in healthier ways. I attended a few AA meetings but didn’t feel comfortable. You will see that I take juice at communion. I am more than comfortable around alcohol. We keep it at our house because Chris can have just one drink and be done (don’t ask me how). I am happy to come to your gatherings where alcohol is present — it doesn’t bother me at all.

Getting sober was one of the best gifts I’ve ever given to myself. I am grateful every single day to be sober. I don’t judge those who drink. I mainly share with you so you learn something new about me and an invitation — If you are struggling with your relationship with alcohol, I am always willing to help. As of my writing this, I am 2,439 days sober. It literally has been one day at a time. To God be the glory!

In Christ,
Pastor J
