Back in Session

It’s early Tuesday morning and I’m sitting at my kitchen table writing this, but my mind is already on Sunday. This isn’t necessarily abnormal for my line of work. But I am especially excited about Sunday as we get to kick off our Sunday school programming! When I started in ministry, I had no idea how much joy working with kids, teens, and young adults would bring me. It is one of the best parts of what I am called to do. So I’m feeling a little like a kid on Christmas morning.
Growing up, my first encounter with any kind of church education was confirmation. And, to be honest, I hated it. It’s part of the reason why I try to make confirmation even just a tad enjoyable.
I think part of the reason I love Sunday school programming so much is because our kids have so much to teach us. My faith in God increases every time someone shares with me the way they see God. Children are no exception. Often, kids are talked down to, lessons are “dumbed down” or avoided altogether, or we teach only the familiar “happy” stories. But I think our kids are capable of so much more than we give them credit for. Kids are brilliant and able to process complex ideas. The way the kids see God changes the way I see God, and I am so lucky to be able to learn from them.
We are looking forward to seeing all ages this Sunday. If you haven’t registered yet, it’s not too late. If family circumstances, whatever they may be, don’t allow you or your kids to attend every Sunday, you’re still welcome. If your kiddo isn’t baptized, they are welcome. If your kiddo isn’t confirmed, they are welcome. If your kid wants to bring a friend (we love that), know that they are welcome too. The kingdom of God is open for all, and school is in session!
