Overcoming Giants Together

In case you missed it, the kids at Salem and Overland Park Lutheran had a musical camp for a week and then performed the story of David and Goliath on Sunday, Aug. 3. The Bigger They Are, the Harder They Fall was full of fun and energy with cute sheep, a sad king, a brave shepherd, a talented harpist, fierce soldiers, lovely solos, dancing and kicklines, and a fantastic message about trusting God’s will for your life. I’m completely biased, but I think music ministry brings us together in magical ways. Example: one of my favorite parts of musical camp (and I think the kids agree) is snack time! After 45 minutes of working on music, moves, and lines, we all zip from the sanctuary to the fellowship hall to sit around a big table, have a little sugar, and get to know each other. Over the course of the week, the shy ones come out of their shells, and the loud ones do a little more listening. With some gentle guidance they realize that each of them is an important part of the message, and they begin putting their amazing energy into lifting each other up. We all clap for each other, laugh at the silly parts of the script, and give suggestions for ways to bring the story to life.
During the week, they overcome the “giants” of quickly learning music, being comfortable speaking lines into a microphone, finding the right props for each scene, and remembering the order of everything. But more importantly they learn to encourage and lean on each other, remember that perfection is never the goal, and have a wonderful time leading worship together. A big thank you to our parents and congregations for cheering for us and showing our children that they are inspirational leaders in God’s Word.
