Who is Your Good Samaritan?

Since we’re going to hear about the Good Samaritan this Sunday, I’d love to share a recent story.
On a Sunday afternoon in early June, my husband Brad and I were driving south to make some repairs to our lake house with a thunderstorm threatening. We turned onto an unpaved road, and about 100 feet later one of the truck tires went immediately flat. Brad found the jack and spare, and then realized the bolts were larger than the tool we had to remove them. Within seconds, a police officer miraculously pulled out of a driveway about 50 feet away and asked if we needed help. When he saw the problem, he asked if we had a “persuader” (a bigger hammer) and went back down his driveway to get tools.
Here's the thing: Sgt. Polster is a resident of LaCygne, likely a farmer, and a police officer in Osawatomie, which is 30 minutes away. He went back to his house at least three times to get tools to help us with our stubborn flat tire. During that time other drivers passed by, some offered help and some didn’t. When we were concerned about making him very late for his job in a different precinct, he said it’s frowned upon for any officer to turn the other way when someone is stranded on the road.
Do you have a story to tell about someone who has been a good Samaritan in your life? Have you offered help and compassion to someone in need, especially a stranger, without expecting anything in return? I firmly believe that the Holy Spirit puts us in each other’s paths, guiding us to be good neighbors. We can always help, even if we don’t think we have the tools.
