Coming Down the Mountain

Last week our confirmands continued their faith journey in the Rocky Mountains at the beautiful Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp (RTLC). Nora, Ava, Faith, Samuel, and Ruby (along with Paul, Ken, and Mikhaelle) navigated high and low ropes courses, 4-13 mile hikes, white water rafting, fun dance parties, delicious meals, and meaningful Bible studies and worship.

RTLC is very intentional about making camp just one step of an ongoing process of faith formation. The week before we send our youth to camp, parents receive a devotion mailing to guide us through praying for them while they are there and praying with them when they return. A message they hear all week, especially after Bible study, is contemplating how they will carry these experiences and revelations forward as they live their lives after “coming down the mountain.”

I’m completely biased, of course, but I think Salem’s current youth group is so impressive in their dedication to walking in their faith together. They have all learned to be flexible and adaptive through COVID and constant transitions in school and church, and they are enthusiastic and committed to assisting in worship, serving their neighbors, and caring for each other. Their experiences at RTLC have increased their confidence in sharing their faith, and I can’t wait to see what gifts they bring as they carry that growing faith down the mountain!
