Savor the Summer

Believe it or not, we are in the last few weeks of the summer of 2024. On the calendar, we still have two months of summer. But for those of us with kids in school, school is right around the corner.

It seems school supplies, like most things, are put on store shelves earlier and earlier each year. I saw the shelves being filled at Walmart before the Fourth of July. I know it happens every year, but I never like the reminder that summer is almost over.

My kids are older and more independent, but I still enjoy having them at home during the day in the summer when I get home from work. I get to see my daughter a little more in the summer, as during the school year she is gone all day for school, then most evenings for dance or youth group. I rarely see her during the school year except for an hour or two after school and a little bit on the weekend.

The appearance of school supplies is also a wistful reminder that is my last time to buy them. This will be my daughter’s senior year, and the final trip to the store in early August to buy what she thinks she might need for the coming year, followed by subsequent visits later August and into September to purchase what she forgot she needs or didn’t know she needed until she started her classes.

As the summer comes to a close, take some time to savor it, enjoying the last few weeks with your kids and family. Because school will be here before you know it!
