Gathered in My Name

I love that our building in Lenexa that houses our staff offices, Pantry Pack, and fellowship area is named “Koinonia Hall.” I remember when we voted on that name, and how very long it took me to remember how to pronounce and spell it!

Did you know that the word fellowship is derived from the Greek word koinonia? Merriam-Webster defines koinonia as “the Christian fellowship or body of believers.” I find my favorite definition of fellowship in Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three are gathered in My name, I am there among them.”

Connecting through fellowship has been tricky the last few years. We had to get creative, use technology, stay outside, and otherwise be very intentional about staying connected. I am very proud of our congregation for making it through this ridiculously difficult time, and continuing relationships that are so important! Thank you to our Salem fellowship team for creating space to connect before and after worship with coffee and snacks, especially as we celebrate confirmands, first communion, milestone birthdays, and graduates. Thank you to our Sunday school teachers and leaders of all ages who give us time to connect through scripture, conversation, music, crafts, and play time. Thank you to those dedicated to outreach, spreading God’s love through feeding the hungry, building ramps for the disabled, and caring for our friends who are hurting.

I hope you continue to find ways to fellowship this summer. Let’s get together to watch our kids perform in community theater; discuss scripture together mid-week; play gaga ball at Koinonia Hall; meet for coffee or a meal; pray for our confirmands as they travel to Rainbow Trail camp; help with VBS in July; and be led in worship by our kids after musical camp. As we gather in God’s name, God will be with us.

In Christ’s love,
Heather Lewis
Director of Music and Worship
