Wisdom Comes to Our Minds and Hearts

When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy.
Matthew 2:10

As I sit down to write this Staff Trax, it is January 6, 2021, the Epiphany of Our Lord. I know that some of you use the devotional book “The Word in Season.” Today’s devotion focuses on wisdom. When you hear the word wisdom, what comes into your mind and heart? When I hear the word, what comes to mind is people who have said things that inspire, encourage, and help the hearer to think in a new way. These people are leaders, teachers, prophets, and grand individuals who speak in ways I never could.

But what comes into my heart is something a little different. I think of the wise words from my grandparents, my parents, aunts, and uncles. I think of friends who have sat by me as I struggled to understand a situation that seemed unexplainable to me. When I hear the word wisdom and have it come into my heart, I think of those tender moments where God has broken through to touch my life.

Even though 2020 was very challenging year, there were those moments of wisdom that touched our hearts, such as learning new ways of being church outside the walls of buildings. Yesterday I spoke to a few colleagues and we discussed what we have learned from this past year — how it has changed us and the way we do ministry.

What is the wisdom we will take from this year, one colleague asked? What we can take is the wisdom of the heart, those changes and adapting to different ways of being. Knowing we can do it! We can be the church outside of buildings. For God is on the loose, breaking through, teaching us the wisdom to change lives.

So, my siblings in Christ, as we begin this new year, this new journey, may we be open to the wisdom of God that longs to teach us and open our hearts to new ways of being faithful. I close with the prayer from the devotional.

God of wisdom, let my eyes be opened to the stars
and your dreams for me.
Amen

Pastor Cynthia
