The Best Way to Spread Christmas Cheer

… is singing loud for all to hear! OK, as a choir director, I’m biased. I have missed my choirs in 2020 more than I can explain. Normally I would have begun rehearsing the adult choir Christmas cantata in October, and the children’s Christmas program in November — so I am two months behind indulging in early Christmas music.

Salem’s tradition is to have the “Word through Music” on the third Sunday in Advent, as the choir provides beautiful narrations and Christmas music in place of the sermon. This year we are attempting our first virtual choir, which is a combination of families singing together in their homes. I began recording last weekend, and have felt the joy all week! It will be a multi-generational performance, with grandparents, parents, and children singing carols and telling the Christmas story.

Even if there was hesitation when I arrived, you will see the fun that Christmas music creates, no matter the experience of the singer. It has been so fun to create music in front of different Christmas trees, plants, and angel collections, with pets making occasional appearances. I am so thankful for all who were willing to step out of their comfort zone to create this genuine, “sing around the piano” experience for our congregation to enjoy. Tune in December 13!

In Christ's love,
Heather Lewis
Director of Music and Worship
