I Am Listening

One of the first things I learned when I began doing interim pastor ministry was that our first job is to listen.

  • Listen to the history of the congregation
  • Listen to the leaders of the congregation
  • Listen to those you visit in their homes, coffee shop, wherever you can hear their voices
  • Listen carefully, because during an interim people want to be heard

This past week I have been listening. As I delivered Advent gifts to people and they opened their doors to me with masks, we chatted about our life as a faith community and about how things are going for them during the pandemic. I also have received phone calls and emails from members who are concerned about our Salem family. I know that there are members from the congregation who are also calling and checking in with others, and for that I am thankful. Keeping the lines of communication open is essential in times like these, so I thank you for helping us all stay connected.

I, too, am concerned, as we continue to put safe practices in place. The church council is talking about our in-person worship services, and more information will be coming out soon. But for now, I ask you to keep the council in your prayers as they will make decisions about our worship. I ask you to make decisions that keep you safe — wear a mask, wash your hands, and social distance. Finally, I ask you to keep in touch with me, the staff, and council members — I am listening and so are they. We want to do whatever we can to keep our Salem community connected. Always remember we are blessed by the one who gives us new life, the one who redeems us and sustains us on our journey of faith. Keep up the faith, siblings! God is with us always!

Lord, listen to your children praying,
Lord, send your Spirit in this place;
Lord, listen to your children praying,
send us love,
send us power,
send us grace.
