Change

What a road we have traveled these many years together in a house that we all love! This place has gone through many changes and has grown in so many ways, always working on giving to the community and spreading the word of God and His teachings and becoming a Reconciling in Christ church. We have had many births, lost many loved ones, held baptisms, and had members who have moved. New members have found a new home, a new place to share their love, their talents, their giving, and their friendship. Many of us when asked, "What brought you to Salem?" will say, the people, the kindness, the giving.

I have had the honor to do some sermons throughout the years at Salem for the men’s services. About a month or two before, I would meet with the pastor, go over the reading for that week, and then tie my sermon to the readings. For that month before, I would think about that gospel every day, running thoughts through my head on what I want to say, and putting it in today’s perspective. At some point my thoughts gathered, and I was able to say what I felt and how I interpreted it. It wasn’t easy, but in that month, I learned a lot personally and spiritually, and I grew more each time.

For weeks I have been trying to find a verse to suit all of what’s going on, as I try to stay positive during this time. Joshua 1:9 says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” It doesn't matter where we go, where we move; it's going to be new for everyone. It already is different in the world now: we all have a "new normal" whether we wanted it or not, but we do have to be strong and try not to worry about what is going on around us, as this will all in time pass.

During this time of transition, I have chosen to help when I can and reflect on the memories. I believe through meditation and praying that this will be a good thing. Change. It's tough for anyone, because just walking through the building — the old part and new — still feels like home. There is a Bob Marley song that fits with what is going on, “Three Little Birds.” Listen to it. Be patient. We will adjust in time, and the memories we have can go wherever we go. And when someone asks what brought you to Salem, it will still be the people, the kindness, and the giving.
