Catching the Glimpses of God

Where is God? This past Sunday, Christ the King Sunday, I preached about seeing glimpses of God’s kingdom. There were all kinds of glimpses in our worship Sunday at both services! Did you catch them? Were you paying attention? At the font and at the table, in the pew and in the aisle (a child dancing in the second service), in the watching and the speaking, in the singing and the praying — glimpses of God’s glory shining forth. As people were leaving, they would mention to me how they were going to watch for orange cars! But I hope that they will catch God at work around them in the many places their daily lives take them.

This Sunday there will be a new adult education class held in Koinonia Fellowship Hall. Lynn Ross and I will be leading the discussion for this Sunday. The sessions are built around a book by Diana Butler Bass called “Grateful: The Transformative Power of Giving Thanks.” The first session is “Where is God?”. God is a part of our human experience with us. But where and when do we claim and name that in our lives? In worship, with family and friends, with our neighbor, with the stranger we encounter?

As we begin the season of Advent I want to lift up the themes of the season — stay awake, pay attention, be prepared, and, most importantly, don’t miss the glimpse of God in our midst. As we continue to journey together as interim pastor and children of God, I pray that we will discover the joy of being connected to God and to one another, that we all can grow in gratitude to this amazing God — who has created us each as precious, redeemed us by Jesus who welcomes us to paradise, and the Holy Spirit that sustains us each and every day. And let the people say — AMEN!

Peace,
Pastor Cynthia Schnaath
