Love, Understanding, and Support

This week we are asked to be aware of and support those with mental health disease. I’m pretty sure that there are many of you in our congregation that are affected personally by symptoms or have friends and family that are. Challenges are both physical and mental. Getting help for mental health challenges was a topic on CBS This Morning. I’m not going to get into the politics of insurance companies without challenging each and every one of us to accept mental health issues as just that — a health issue. It is not a character defect!

Charles Spurgeon once said, “The mind can descend far lower than the body, for in it are bottomless pits. The flesh can bear only a certain number of wounds, and no more, but the soul can bleed in ten thousand ways, and die over and over again each hour.”

Whoa! Well, that’s pretty discouraging, but our blessing these days is that mental health issues are being addressed professionally far better than they were a few decades ago. The stigma is lifting, as well. There certainly is hope, and there certainly is help out there.

As Christians and as a congregation we can support, love, and accept those that are suffering with respect and with encouragement.

And as my mom always said, “I’m going to love you until you can love yourself!”.

In God’s loving name,
Toni Graham
Child Care Coordinator
