Block Par-tay!

Last night we enjoyed hosting a neighborhood block party with our friends at Lenexa United Methodist. The party was held in between our churches, in the parking lot, in the shade — whew! There was a large bounce house, smooth jazz music playing, smoking barbecue from the new Santa Fe barbecue restaurant, cool homemade ice cream, and space for people to come together around tables.

Walking around, snapping pictures, I heard snippets of many conversations. There were people talking to folks they knew well, people from two different worshiping communities introducing themselves to each other, folks being welcomed in from the neighborhood, adults talking to young people about their school year, and many other combinations of people in conversation. I saw people making room at their table for newcomers, and others showing folks where to get food and drinks. It was awesome!

It is moments like this, I believe, that God smiles.
I believe that God looks at God’s people in community with each other and beams with pride at how good we can be to each other sometimes. I want us to remember moments like this, and try to re-create them as often as we can.

God’s people are beautiful. God is good.
