Can We Live in Unity?

If you know me, you’re probably not surprised that I am an extreme optimist. I look for the good in people and situations. This can be … ahem … annoying, as I like to “romp through my field of daisies” instead of looking at things in a more realistic light; I leave that up to my auditor husband!
God obviously created us to be different from each other, and I find it so interesting that opposites attract. Many use “you complete me” as the ultimate compliment to a friend or spouse, yet we’ve all experienced how our differences can also cause arguments, miscommunication, hurt feelings. Gandhi once said, “Our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and the test of our civilization.”
Jesus spends a lot of time in his last days with his disciples trying to explain why it’s important to be unified. He prayed for unity, explaining that His love would continue even after His death, as the disciples would become one and love the world as He loved:
“The goal is for all of them to become one heart and mind — just as You, Father, are in Me and I in You … and give the godless world evidence that You’ve sent Me and loved them in the same way you’ve loved Me.” (The Message, John 17: 22-23)
Even as the world tries to divide us, we are assured that God created our differences to strengthen us as one. Be encouraged, and lift each other up!
