Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
When I first arrived at Salem in October, 1999, we were in the midst of adding the new narthex to the sanctuary that also would house the new elevator. At that time, there was literally a hole in the ground where the new addition now stands. This addition was much needed, but during the construction time there were many who could not attend worship because they physically could not get in and out of the building without an elevator. The interim pastor who was assigned here before me then began to send a weekly letter that gave an update on the construction project.
When I arrived, I changed the letter somewhat. I would still give facility updates, but I began to include other news from Salem so those who could not attend would continue to know what was happening here. Then, after the new addition was finished, I changed the letter to be more theological and offer some of my personal thoughts at times about issues or happenings in the world, and that has been our practice now for about five years.
When I came here, I was the only full-time staff member. In addition to Kathy, our office administrator, we had several part-time staff at that time. Today, we have two full-time program staff members, John Holt, Director of Teen, Family and Communication Ministries, and Meghan Harmison, Director of Adult Ministries and Outreach. In addition, we have Heather Lewis as our full-time Director of Music and Worship, and a few other part-time positions, all of which means there is a lot happening at Salem these days.
Therefore, it is time for a change in the weekly letter again! To help keep you best informed and aware of the many incredible ministries happening here, I will no longer be the only one writing our weekly letter. The staff, along with me, will alternate sending you a letter. Beginning next week, you will receive a letter from a different staff member each week sharing with you news from the ministries they are involved in.
I am excited about this change and I hope you will find it helpful and enjoyable.
